"The Liberated Child - Childhood in the Works of Astrid Lindgren"
Stockholm, May 30-31, 2007
The Swedish Institute for Children's Books (Sbi) arranged an international interdisciplinary conference celebrating the centenary of Astrid Lindgren, the most famous Swedish children's author of all times, and one of the most translated and best-loved children's writers of the world. The conference brought together scholars from twenty countries, ranging from Iran to Estonia, from Canada to Taiwan. Keynote speakers were Dr. Karen Coats (Department of English, Illinois state university), PhD. Ulla Lundqvist (PhD of comparative literature, literary critic, author, Stockholm, Sweden), David Rudd (senior lecturer in the Department of cultural & creative studies at Bolton Institute, Lancashire, England) and PhD Astrid Surmatz (assistant professor in Scandinavian studies at Amsterdam university, in 2007/2008 she is the first holder of the Astrid Lindgren memorial guest professorship at Växjö university in Sweden)
Documentation from the conference was published in the double issue of Barnboken - journal of children's literature research. Ten of the papers presented at the conference, including all those presented by the keynote speakers, are published. The papers contain different aspects of Astrid Lindgren's works and authorship. The conference was organized by the Swedish Institute for Children's Books and received financial support from The Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation, The Royal Academy of Letters, The Swedish Institute and The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.
